Lindau Harbour

Lindau's famous harbour, which is still regarded today as the most attractive anywhere on Lake Constance, was completed in 1856. The 6m high monument with the lion looking over the lake is a work by the sculptor Johann von Halbing. The Bavarian heraldic emblem flanks the harbour entrance together with the 33m high lighthouse. Thousands of lights create a magical harbour atmosphere.

The Pulverturm

The Pulverturm, the former magazine dating from 1508, stands stolidly on the western tip of the island. The tower was integrated into the town's defensive wall in the 16th century when the rear part of the island, where fields, vineyards and also a cemetery used to be situated, was reinforced.

Lindau Town Museum

Located in the "Haus zum Cavazzen" on the market square. The house was reconstructed by the builder Grubermann from Teufen following the town fire in 1729/30, and was regarded by the famous art historian Dehio to be the "most beautiful town residence on Lake Constance". This stately baroque building has housed the town museum since 1929. Today, a large collection of different styles of furniture, ranging from the Gothic era to Art Nouveau, prints, silverware, glassware, tin and ceramic objects, historical toys, as well as significant paintings and sculptures, are on display here. The special attraction in the town museum is the collection of mechanical musical instruments.

The Diebsturm

The Diebsturm, also called the Malefizturm or Stadtknechtsturm, was built around 1370 as the most westerly point of the old town wall. In the Middle Ages, it served as a prison. The coloured roof tiling originates from the last century.

The Peterskirche

The Peterskirche is the oldest church in Lindau. Built around the year 1000 AD, it was the town's parish church until 1180. It has been a war memorial since 1928. An important work of art inside the building are the frescos on the north wall, created by Hans Holbein the Elder towards the end of the 15th century.

The Mangturm

Designed to protect the harbour, the old lighthouse or Mangturm was erected in the 13th century. The name Mangturm originates from the cloth or mangle house, which used to stand next to it. Following a lightning strike in the summer of 1979, the roofing was renewed using tiles in the style of the last century.

The Old town hall

The old town hall was erected between 1422 and 1436 in Gothic style. Later, between 1536 and 1578, it was modified in the style of the Renaissance. The ground floor houses the Free Town library, which dates back several centuries, and the town archive. The two upper halls are today used as conference rooms. The paintings in the oriel represent the Ten Commandments. The magnificent works show scenes from the German Imperial Diet, or parliament, from the year 1496.

Old Lindau Cemetery in Aeschach

The most significant cultural monument in the history of Lindau is located at the junction of Langenweg and Anheggerstrasse. This listed church graveyard was used to house mausoleums from 1510-1915. Built onto high walls, around 100 Italian-style mausoleums stand here with tombs from the Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical and Jugendstil periods, together with the Gothic Kröllkapelle. In summer, concerts are held in the Catholic Ulrichskapelle. The Old Cemetery with its beautiful collection of trees was transformed into a park in 1940.
